Shannon Kane

MSN, CNM

Born and raised in Anaheim, CA but most recently living in cold and snowy Indiana, Shannon is beyond excited to have returned to her Orange County roots and joined the Laguna Beach OB/GN Midwife team!

Shannon was drawn to the calling of midwifery after witnessing her first birth as a support to her sister as she delivered her first nephew at a hospital in 2004. She immediately knew then that attending families in pregnancy and birth was exactly what she was mean to do with her life. That same year she returned to school, completing her nursing degree in 2008, already planning to continue her schooling to become a midwife.

After undergrad, Shannon worked as a Labor and Delivery nurse at a high-risk tertiary care center in NY for 6 years. During that time, she also trained as a Doula with DONA, worked as a homebirth assistant with local midwives and attended midwifery school.

In 2014, Shannon graduated, with honors, from Frontier Nursing University, with her Master’s Degree in Nursing and received her National Certification in Nurse-Midwifery. In early 2015 Shannon founded Tree of Life Midwifery, serving primarily Amish and Menonnite families, attending births both at home and in two local community owned birth centers. She has been blessed to welcome around 200 babies into this world so far, two of the most special of them being her second nephew in 2014, at a birth center, as a student midwife and then, most recently, her only niece in 2018, at home, as a midwife. Having been a part of all her niece and nephews’ births brings them a unique and special bond she treasures immensely.

Shannon is extremely passionate about educating persons and families about their healthcare choices and options using evidence-based information as a solid foundation but also encouraging and embracing shared decision making and informed consent (and refusal) as the cornerstones of individualized care. She is also passionate about protecting the birthing space and time as well as the mother-baby dyad in the immediate postpartum period and beyond.

When she is not busy catching babies, Shannon enjoys traveling, spending time with family and friends, reading, listening to her vinyl collection on her vintage turntable and spending time with her husband, Jason, and their 3 feline fur babies.
